Agility

Agility is an active sport for dogs and people where the dog is required to negotiate a range of different obstacles

What Makes Agility Unique

  • It's about gaining confidence and skills using agility equipment.

  • Agility training is a great way to exercise your dog, yourself

  • Agility provides your dog with the stimulation that learning something new provides.

  • Dogs will build on their confidence as they learn to traverse agility equipment and you perform new moves. 

Training Times

We Offer The Following Classes:


FOUNDATION CLASS

Foundation agility is for those handlers/dogs new to agility. This class puts the focus of having fun while you and your dog are learning lots of new skills. In this class we will introduce jumps and tunnels and show you some important skills you will need to work on at home.

Pre-requisites:

Hand touch – can the handler get their dog to come and hand touch from a two-metre distance from any direction

Can the handler send their dog to a down on a mat from a two-metre distance and then the handler moves around all 4 corners of the mat at the two-metre distance and the dog stays in a down. Treats can be thrown to the dog

Has the handler taught their dog a trick e.g. spin, back up, paw shake

Can the dog focus on their handler even when there are distractions

Recall - the handler can call their dog to them with distractions

Does the dog have a drive back to the handler’s side for reinforcement (food or toy)

LEVEL 1 CLASS

Criteria for graduation from Foundation to Level one:

Can run with your dog off lead in a circle for 30 seconds.

Can call and send dog through flexi-tunnel 

Can run along ramp and reward at the end on the ground 

Can lead-out 5m and call dog off lead 

Can run dog around a circle of jumps and a line of jumps

 

LEVEL 2 CLASS

Criteria for graduation from level one to level two: 

Dog can work off lead for a simple sequence without running away. 

Dog can perform a minimum 5 obstacle sequence of non-contacts/weaves without the handler luring the dog with food or a toy (can be carried in pocket). 

Dog can jump their full competition height (hurdle, long jump, hoop). 

Dog can weave 4 poles in a straight line OR is working 6 – 12 channel poles off-lead with handler running beside. 

Dog is confident on lowered A-frame and dog walk (can be on-lead). 

Handler can describe their contact criteria and knows how to train it both on and off the equipment. 

Handler understands front crosses and shows a reasonable understanding of how to get around a simple course.

LEVEL 3 CLASS

Criteria for graduation from level two to level three:

Dog can complete a simple sequence of up to 15 obstacles in one go

Dog can competently complete 12 weaves poles

Dog can confidently perform both the A-Frame and Dog Walk at full height with contact criteria being met.

Handler can perform front cross, Blind Cross and Rear Cross with their dog.

Dog and handler are competing or are about to start competing


COMPETITION SENIOR/INSTRUCTOR CLASS
This class is for handlers and dogs competing at Intermediate/Senior level and is self-instructing.

Criteria for graduation from level three to Senior/Instructors class:

Your dog has won up to Senior or Jumpers A at Championship shows

Your dog can confidently complete all obstacles including the seesaw

Or you are a part of the instructor group

  • Agility Link competition runs every month on club grounds..

Requirements

  • Dogs must gain an assessment pass in Canine Good Basics as the minimum requirement for enrolling, and preferably attended the  Dog Manners class as well.

  • We cannot take reactive or aggressive dogs in these classes. 

  • Dogs cannot be  overweight

  • Dogs must be over the age of 12 months and under the age of 7 years 

  • Handlers must have a good level of control of their dogs when off lead– this means that your dog does not run off after other dogs or run away from you when you call it to you, and comes back to you immediately when called. 

  • Your dog must have the ability to work with you in an exciting, busy environment. We understand there could be initial high-level excitement, and you will be encouraged through that initial stage.
